The United Kingdom has a history of regulating and banning gambling. The introduction of gambling into the UK was not always easy. The history of online gambling in the UK has been a very slow one. In the UK there has been no online gambling legislation until recently. In 2000, the Interactive Gambling Act was passed which allowed for “Internet Games” to be defined as “games of skill, not chance” for the first time in any jurisdiction. The Gambling Act 2005 extended this definition. The act also prohibited advertising of gambling services, and stated that the act was only intended to deal with new technologies.

The current system of licensing is relatively new, having been introduced in 2003.
